Dogs & Cats Rule was founded in Sept 2001 by “Lead Dog” George Parente. George has spent his entire life as a small business owner. He began working at age 13 in his father’s delicatessen, and never looked back. He has owned a variety of businesses over the last 50 years, but has found his niche as an independent pet retailer. Dogs & Cats Rule was built on the philosophy that pet parents should have access to the very best of natural and organic diets. George opened his first location in Newtown, PA and has been growing ever since.
In 2004, “Little Sis” Joann started working with George after 30 years as a Registered Nurse in Philadelphia. This partnership lead to the opening of their second location in the summer of 2005. A new center off of Route 31 in Pennington, NJ was chosen. The Pennington location was over 3,000 square feet, twice as big as the original Newtown location. It took some time, but the Pennington location began to thrive.
In 2009 George was presented with an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. A retail space was available in the Windsor Green Shopping Center, located on Route 1 South in Princeton. The current center was home to the area’s largest regional Whole Foods Market. George believed he had found a perfect home for store number 3. The Princeton location required substantial renovation and opened in the fall of 2010.
By spring of 2013, George was ready to open his largest location in The Maple Glen Shopping Center in the Village of Maple Glen. The area seemed to be under-served, especially with regard to our specialty of bringing a natural and holistic approach to your fur-babies’ nutrition and health. With more than 6,000 square feet of bright and airy shopping space, this store isn’t your typical pet supply store. Even with thousands of items to browse (and a very knowledgeable staff to assist with questions and help resolve issues), there is more than enough room for two shopping carts to pass each other in the aisles! What’s more, our customers have proven to be very appreciative of our consultative methods - and we appreciate them.
After years of searching, George found his most unique space to date in the borough of Doylestown, PA. Opened in October 2017, the Doylestown store afforded George the opportunity to create a “greener” space. With almost 40 windows, the store is flooded with natural light during the day. Open ceilings were fitted with LED lighting, which reduced the amount of heat generated as well as the overall energy used. Located off Main St in the borough, the store has an old town feel that harkens back to George’s roots in his Philadelphia neighborhood.
